Jesus, the smell of cinnamon and fresh cookies, lights, Christmas trees, candy canes, snow (or if you live in Texas like me, 75 degrees and sunny), hot cocoa, peppermint flavored everything (my fav), family, friends, and ugly sweaters. All things that remind me of Christmas.
Christmas is by far my favorite holiday. I love everything about it. Ever since I was a little girl my family always had all these traditions we did every year at Christmas time. We made sleighs out of different candies, gingerbread houses, and snowflakes. We would all put our Christmas jammies on and get in the car and go look at all the houses lit up with lights, then come home and read the story of baby Jesus being born, set out cookies and milk for Santa, and go get in bed and anxiously await the next morning.
This year will be Blake and I's first Christmas together as a married couple. We are both so excited! I mean what's better than waking up to the love of your life on Christmas morning? We can't wait to start our own traditions this year, some old and some new. Here are a few we will be doing this Christmas season.
1. 3 gifts on Christmas Day.
This is something we have done in the past and we just love the meaning behind it. The 3 gifts represent the 3 gifts that the wise men brought to Jesus when he was born. Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh. We want to be reminded of Jesus and his birth as much as possible during this season, so this is a great way to reflect and be reminded that Christmas is not ultimately about the gifts, but about Jesus being born and celebrating His life and death on the cross for us, and his resurrection.
2. Christmas Jammies, Hot Chocolate, and Lights
This is the same tradition we have done since I was a little girl and it has always been something I have wanted to carry on into my family. So after Christmas Eve service we will exchange our Christmas jammies we got each other, get some hot chocolate, and go look at all the beautiful houses lit up with lights!
3. Thankfulness and Prayers
I have to give credit to my hubs for this one. He has so many great ideas! All you need for this fun tradition is some paper and 2 big clear orniments, we found ours at Hobby Lobby! On 1 piece of paper you write things you are thankful for this year, and on the other you write your prayers for the upcoming year. Then you just roll them up and put them inside the orniments and hang them on your tree. The the next year when you go to decorate your tree again you get them out and read and reflect on them! So cool, right?? Love it.
Those are a few of the traditions we will be doing during our first Christmas as the Kelchs! I can't wait to see how the traditions grow and change throughout the years :)
Now here's a fun and super easy Christmas cookie recipe!
Enjoy and God Bless,
Elisha.
Cake Mix Christmas Cookies
Ingredients:
2 eggs (room temp)
1/2 cup of oil
1 package of white cake mix
Your choice of Christmas sprinkles
Combine the 2 eggs and half cup of oil into the cake mix. Mix until it is smooth. Add whatever amount of sprinkles you desire (I don't measure these). Then put a little bit more oil on your hands (this keeps the dough from sticking to your hands) and roll the dough into balls and place on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 10 minutes then enjoy! You can also throw them in a cute Christmas tin and give them as gifts :)
